We believe that your eye exam is more than just a routine prescription check. It's an opportunity to assess the health of your eyes, ensuring that your vision is at its very best. Our comprehensive eye examinations go beyond merely measuring your vision – they're designed to provide a holistic evaluation of your eye health.
Children's eyes are critical for learning and comprehending the world around them, but they may not detect or articulate problems with their sight. It's vital to have their eyes examined early on to prevent permanent vision impairment and misalignment of the eyes.
History and Symptoms discusses your personal and family health information and explains any concerns you have related to your eyes or vision. This part of the eye examination is important for us to understand your individual needs and to help identify potential eye problems.
Visual Acuity Test involves reading letters on a vision chart to assess how well you can see.
Refraction we show you lenses and ask which one makes the eye chart clearer. Based on your answers, we determine what prescription is needed for your glasses or contact lenses.
Pupil Response tests the reactions of your pupils to light, which can reveal neurological issues.
Tonometry checks your intraocular eye pressure. This is one of the screening tests for glaucoma.
Biomicroscopy involves a specialised microscope called a slit lamp, which is used to examine the structures of the front of the eye. It's effective for assessing various eye conditions such as dry eyes, cataracts, and styes.
Retinal Examination utilises a handheld lens in conjunction with a slit lamp to view structures of the back of the eye. This allows us to thoroughly assess the health of the retina and check for posterior eye diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma.
Digital Retinal Photography and Scanning captures high-resolution cross-section images of the back of the eye using advanced imaging technology. These detailed images allow for early detection and monitoring of various eye conditions.
In addition to the comprehensive examination outlined above, we offers additional tests to further evaluate the health of your eyes:
Dilated Eye Exam involves administering eye drops to temporarily enlarge the pupil. This allows for a better view of the structures at the back of the eye. It's important to note that the dilation effect may last for a few hours, leading to temporary sensitivity to light and blurred vision. For this reason, it is advisable not to drive immediately following the examination.
Visual Field Test assesses field of vision, including central and peripheral vision. It is used to monitor the progression of glaucoma and can be a valuable tool in detecting neurological diseases.
Colour Vision Screening with the Ishihara Test identifies colour vision deficiencies by evaluating your ability to perceive and distinguish colours.
Binocular Vision Assessment evaluates the ability to use both eyes together. It helps to detect issues related to eye focusing, eye alignment and depth perception.

Regular eye exams enable us to address any changes to your vision and provide recommendations for maintaining your eye health. They are beneficial in identifying eye problems in their early stages, making them easier to treat and minimising the impact on your eyesight.
Children's eyes are critical for learning and comprehending the world around them, but they may not detect or articulate problems with their sight. It's vital to have their eyes examined early on to prevent permanent vision impairment and misalignment of the eyes.
Myopia is a common eye condition that causes distant objects to appear blurry, resulting in gradual elongation of the eye which significantly increases the life long risk of sight threatening eye diseases. Our team can provide guidance on treatment options available to slow down the progression of myopia such as orthokeratology, Miyosmart spectacles, Misight soft contact lenses, and atropine eye drops.
Fundus photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are non-invasive diagnostic tools to capture high-resolution images and scans of the back of your eye. These imaging techniques assist in diagnosing and tracking the progression of various eye diseases.
Glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve at the back of the eye, resulting in peripheral vision loss that can lead to blindness. Assessment involves checking the health of the optic nerve, measuring intraocular pressure and visual field testing
Diabetes has the potential to damage blood vessels in the eyes, resulting in ocular complications such as diabetic retinopathy and macular edema. If left untreated, this can lead to vision loss. It is highly recommended for all diabetics to undergo an annual eye examination that includes the use of dilating eye drops to thoroughly assess the back of your eyes.
At Theia Optical, we recommended an eye test every year to ensure your eyes are healthy and your vision is clear. Annual eye examinations help monitor changes in vision and detect early signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration. For individuals with certain risk factors like diabetes or a family history of eye conditions, more frequent exams may be necessary.
It's important to schedule an eye examination if you notice any of the following signs: blurry vision or changes to vision, headaches, eye strain, or if you find yourself squinting or rubbing your eyes often. Regular eye examinations can detect problems early, ensuring you receive appropriate treatment and maintain good eye health.
Our comprehensive eye examinations are bulk-billed under Medicare in Australia, which means that eligible patients can have their eye test fully covered. If additional eye testing or scans are recommended by our optometrist, we will discuss the cost with you upfront.
For your eye test, please ensure you bring your Medicare card, any previous contact lenses or spectacles, and, if applicable, your private health insurance card. This will help streamline the process and ensure all necessary information is readily available during your eye appointment.
Our standard eye examinations generally last around 30 minutes, depending on the tests involved and any additional concerns you may have. If further eye testing is necessary, we may arrange another appointment to ensure a comprehensive evaluation
• Arrange transportation: Since your eyes will be dilated, your vision may be temporarily blurry and sensitive to light. Plan for someone to accompany you or arrange transportation if needed.
• Inform your optometrist: Share any medical history, medications, or allergies with your eye doctor. This helps us tailor the examination and choose appropriate eye drops.
• Bring Sunglasses: After the eye test, your eyes will be sensitive to light. Bring sunglasses to protect your eyes and make your journey home more comfortable.
• Allow Time: Dilation typically takes about 20-30 minutes to take effect before the optometrist checks your eyes. Plan your schedule accordingly to accommodate the waiting period and the eye examination itself.
At Theia Optical, we offer a variety of eye care services beyond comprehensive eye test examinations, including:
Contact lens fittings
